Group portrait of the 2nd Reinforcements to the 12th Light Horse Regiment. Identified third row, eighth from left is 887 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Albany Varney. He embarked at Sydney in June 1915, and served at Gallipoli when the three squadrons of the 12th Light Horse were each attached to other light horse units. LCpl Varney's regiment was reunited in Egypt in February 1916 and served in the Sinai-Palestine campaign for the remainder of the war. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg on 1 May 1918 during the Es Salt Raid west of Amman. LCpl Varney was discharged to duty and eventually returned to Australia in August 1919. Handwritten on the verso of the photograph is 'To My Dear Mother & Father from their loving Son Albany'.
