Description

250 kilogram aerial bomb tail with German acceptance stamp markings.

This relic comprises of the tail section from a German 250 kilogram aerial bomb, as used by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. The empty shell comprises of a cone shaped object 360 millimetres in diameter (14 & one quarter inch) and measures 630 millimetres in length (24 & three quarter inch).

The relic appears to be re-painted or in unissued condition. The exterior is painted grey and has a total of four red stripes in the 'valley' area formed by the tail fins. The interior of the cone is painted red. One tail fin bears the German eagle with swastika emblem (acceptance stamp) and the numbers 36 and 41.

A series of holes are drilled around the mouth of the cone, to facilitate attachment to the body of the bomb.

History / Summary

Provenance unknown. The SC 250 (Sprengbombe Cylindrisch 250) was an air-dropped general purpose high-explosive bomb built by Germany during World War II and used extensively during that period. It could be carried by almost all German bomber aircraft. The bomb consisted of three sections; the nose cone, the body, and the base plate, to which the four-finned tail is attached. Bomb could be used against below ground installations up to 8m deep.
