NX9168 Sapper P R (Ray) Walsh, 2/1st Field Company, being greeted on his arrival home, at 2 embarkation depot, RAAF, Bradfield Park, by some of his family: wife Varlie, children Barry and Jeannette. Captured in Crete, he spent several years in prisoner of war (POW) camps in Germany and was one of three army men who boarded the troop transport ship Andes in New Zealand for the return home. (The photographer Ernest McQuillan was responsible for placing the hat on the son's head.) This image was used as the logo for the Australia remembers program of events in 1994-1995.
