History / Summary

Born in Fremantle, Western Australia, Jaspan (also recorded by army authorities as Jasper) Clifford Kruss was employed as a caretaker in Adelaide, South Australia, when he enlisted in the AIF on 21 July 1915. After initial training he was posted a private, service number 2709, to the 6th Reinforcements for 27th Battalion. The unit left Adelaide on 27 October, aboard HMAT A24 Benalla.

In Egypt Kruss transferred to the 10th Battalion on 27 February 1916. The battalion arrived in France for service on the Western Front the following month. Kruss was wounded in the head and both arms at Pozieres on 28 July. He was evacuated to the 5th (British) General Hospital at Rouen where he died on 31 July, aged 26. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery there.

This commemorative plaque was sent to his father, Edmund Andreas Kruss, in December 1922, after the original incorrect cast name 'Jasper Clifford Kruss' has been ground off and the correct name 'Jaspan Clifford Kruss' engraved in its place.
