Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 41 Private Leslie Clift Foster, 2 Battalion, Gallipoli, 1915.

Wallet 1 of 1 - consists of a single, five-page letter that Foster wrote to his father on 6 May 1915 concerning the landing, and Foster's subsequent wounding, on Gallipoli. He writes of observing Royal Navy cruisers bombard the Gallipoli shore before dawn on 25 April and of witnessing men from the 3 Australian Infantry Brigade charge up the ridge with bayonets. He describes his own experience of going ashore under shrapnel fire, of moving into the frontlines, and of the attacks made by the Turks throughout the night. He also summarises the fighting over the next two days, mentions snipers firing on the Australian stretcher-bearers, and gives details on his wounding and evacuation from the peninsula on 27 April.
