Beardall, Gwen (Civilian, b.1932)
Collection relating to the Second World War experience of Miss Gwen Beardall (later Chamberlain), Castlemaine, Victoria, 1945.
Collection consists of one two-page letter from Miss Gwen Beardall to R/20183 Petty Officer Cecil Harold Wilfred "Bill" Westwood. This letter was written on 4 February 1945, when Gwen was 13 years old. In her letter to Petty Officer Westwood, Gwen thanks him for his letter to her. She also shares details of her life, such as being on school holidays, beginning back at Girl Guides for the year, starting a course at the local high school, and having holidays in Melbourne with her family. This letter is the only document that Petty Officer Westwood retained from his time of service, and is a good example of the support that young people on the home front showed for Australians serving overseas.
