Mathews, Jon William (Able Seaman, b.1920 - d.1941)
Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 21757 Able Seaman Jon (John) William Mathews, HMAS Sydney (II), Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Collection consists of one original handwritten diary kept by Able Seaman Mathews, originally containing loose scraps of paper, a pressed flower, and a photograph enclosed at back. The scraps of loose paper have messages written on them which indicate they were for passing messages at Action Stations about what was going on outside of the ship. The diary commences 13th April 1940 and ends 26th December 1940. Also included in the collection is a typed transcript of the diary which now also houses the previous diary inclusions.
