Rag : No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School
Description
A torn piece of brown fabric featuring two blue and red stripes. Part of the rag has been tied into a loop to hold the letter.
History / Summary
On 8 August 1943 a CAC Wakkett aircraft being piloted by Keith Gillespie and Donald Wells from the No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School were forced to land in a paddock in the farm of the Burrows family in Woodstock-on-Loddon in Victoria. The two men experienced great hospitality from the locals while they were waiting for the mechanics and formed a lasting friendship. Later, after a food parcel had been sent by the Burrows family to the pilots, Donald Wells dropped a thank you letter from his plane on the farm. The letter (PR06085) had been wrapped in this rag to help it drop.
