Photos relating to the service of William John Sullivan, 1st Light Horse
Description
Informal outdoor portrait of Private William John Sullivan holding the rein of a horse attached to a sulky during his pre-war service with the 11th Light Horse militia unit. 335 Trooper (Tpr) William Sullivan enlisted in the 1st Light Horse Regiment under the alias of William John Monaghan. Sullivan used the name Monaghan, with the knowledge of his sisters, when he enlisted in 1914 to ensure that his father (who was seriously ill and actually died later in 1914) would not worry if anything happened to him that might be reported in the press. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 29 June 1915, aged 25.
