Transition/evacuation
The dark upside-down figure represents the Taliban supported by Pakistan while the Rostam figure on the right represents the International Coalition Against Terrorism (ICAT). The red, white and blue apparel worn by this figure is designed to evoke the United States, Great Britain and Australia simultaneously. The work was developed in collaboration with Afghan artist Sher Ali, who specialises in painting lions in traditional miniature form.
Khadim Ali's works on this theme represent Afghanistan through the perspective of everyday Hazaras still living in Afghanistan. From their perspective, Afghanistan is a dangerous and highly charged political and religious realm which they negotiate daily. The archaic and savage nature of the work is an attempt to communicate the destruction and brutal drives which have consumed Afghanistan.
