Ole King Cole (Army Version)
'Ole King Cole (Army Version)', by P.S. Robinson of the London Rifle Brigade, was published by Francis, Day and Hunter in 1915. The lyrics parody the British nursery rhyme 'Old King Cole'. The traditional lyrics are substituted with a tale of “Old King Cole” who calls for his Buglers, Corporals, Sergeants, Subalterns, Captains, Majors, Colonels, and Generals.
The back pages feature, by way of publisher’s advertisement, the opening bars of five more songs: 'The Soldiers of the King'; 'Here we are! Here we are!! Here we are again!!!'; 'You’re here and I’m Here'; 'He’d have to get under—get out and get under'; and 'Sister Susie’s Sewing Shirts for Soldiers'.
This copy of the music originally belonged to Private Ernest Alfred Nicholls and features his name at the top of the front cover. It is part of a collection of sheet music that was donated to the Memorial in 1971, and is symbolic of the concerts, theatre and other musical performances that Australian soldiers took in whilst on leave in London during the First World War.
