Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX59947 Lance Sergeant Peter Kincaid Weekes, 2/3 Tank Attack Regiment, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia, 1944-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of ten letters from Lance Sergeant Peter Kincaid Weekes to his fiancée, Miss Jean Marjorie Coates, dated between 19 December 1944 and 29 March 1945. The letters were written while Lance Sergeant Weekes and his regiment were training in Queensland for service in Borneo. In his letters, Lance Sergeant Weekes writes about working hard, attending a sports meeting, gambling, reading books, going to see films at the picture theatre, meeting an old friend, the impact of soldiers on country society, spectating at the first football game of the season, censorship, news regarding mutual friends, being very tired, a potential for bitterness among soldiers regarding employment after the war, his plans for after the war, frustrations with rainy weather, and memories of his service at Tobruk, Libya, in 1941. Lance Sergeant Weekes also responds to news received from Miss Coates.

History / Summary

Lance Sergeant Peter Kincaid Weekes enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 22 July 1940. He was posted to 2/3 Anti-Tank Regiment (2/3 Tank Attack Regiment), and served with this unit in Palestine, Egypt, and Libya, and was involved in battles at Tobruk, Libya, and El Alamein, Egypt. In early 1943, Lance Sergeant Weekes returned to Australia with his unit to prepare for action against the Japanese. He served in the Netherlands East Indies and Borneo between April and October 1945, and was discharged on 15 November 1945.
