Description

Detail of the plaque attached to a monument marking the Bruce Highway's crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn, near Rockhampton. One of 477 colour 35mm transparencies taken or collected by 2784336 Signalman (Sig) Stuart Lindsay Weller, 104 Signal Squadron, relating to his service in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968. Sig Weller recalls "7 RAR was due to begin a tour of duty in Vietnam, and to see how they’d work as a unit they were sent to undertake Operation Nilla Qua at the Army’s Shoalwater Bay Exercise Area north of Rockhampton. Because in Vietnam, radio operators from 104 Signal Squadron would be providing communications between the unit and Task Force Headquarters, a group from 104 were also sent north from Brisbane."
