Description

Rifle, helmet and ammunition magazines belonging to John R Spindler Junior, 41st Signal Battalion, US Army. One of 477 colour 35mm transparencies taken or collected by 2784336 Signalman (Sig) Stuart Lindsay Weller, 104 Signal Squadron, relating to his service in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968. Sig Weller notes: "... our weapon (the SLR) was of more recent vintage – though it didn’t have an automatic fire capability. We of course, didn’t wear a tin hat at any time, favouring our green bush hat instead. We in 104 Signal Squadron were, however, all given tin hats in Brisbane (along with plastic camouflage leaves for it) but were told not to take them to Vietnam. I left mine in a box in Brisbane but then had trouble clearing my Q register at Nui Dat just before I returned home because they wanted the tin hat back! So I walked down to one of the rifle pits on our front wire facing Kangaroo Pad, grabbed a tin hat from there, handed it in and had the item ticked off."
