Union Jack brooch : Lieutenant E F O'Sullivan, 30 Battalion AIF
Small sterling silver Union Jack brooch enamelled in red, white and blue.
This brooch was bought in London by Lieutenant Eugene Francis O'Sullivan of 30 Battalion, AIF, for his daughter, Enid, on his way back to Australia in 1919. Lieutenant O'Sullivan was born in New York but was living in Australia when he enlisted as a private, with the service number 3603, in 30 Battalion on 25 November 1915. On 5 August 1916 he embarked for active service, arriving at Plymouth on 30 September. In 1918 he underwent training to become an officer, but was often ill and completed the course later than originally expected. O'Sullivan was commissioned second lieutenant (acting) on 2 January 1919, and to lieutenant on on 2 April. In May 1919 he embarked from England to Australia on the Hospital Ship Zealandia.
