Description

(Roll 1) Vessel arrives at Port Moresby wharf early in the morning. Local wharf labour watch army crew bathing. Derricks being prepared for unloading. 40 Army work boat being unloaded. This is for use of 2 Battalion Pacific Islands Regiment Wewak Vanamo area in New Guinea. Corporal Gordon McDonald a former member of the crew of the same vessel when it was the MV Mara on the Spencer Gulf to Sydney run. Corporal McDonald lives in Adelaide and has had five and a half years Army service. The vessel left Sydney partly loaded on the 16 September, arrived Brisbane 19 September to complete loading, departed 25 September to arrive Port Moresby early morning on the 1 October loaded with Army stores for Papua New Guinea Command including 40 Engineers work boat for use by 2 PIR. Crates of prefab huts for use at HQ PNG. Command as temporary office and storage space for the recently built up Command in Papua New Guinea. (Roll 2) Corporal McDonald talks with a member of 1 Battalion PIR who is assisting in unloading. Sapper Brian Rodgers of Sutherland winch operator. (Roll 3) HQ PNG Command where crates are being loaded. Crates being checked off civil transport which is delivering to HQ a distance of 5 miles from the wharf.
