Army visit to Bathurst Island and Melville Island
This film was taken by WX30779 Lieutenant Ronald Roy Crispe, Darwin Coast Artillery AIF, while on visit with a Darwin Water Transport vessel to Catholic missions at Bathurst Island and Melville Island shortly after the first Japanese air raid on Darwin. Scenes include: leaving Darwin on Army work boat at dawn and arrival at Bathurst Mission. Bathurst Islanders unloading boat and scenes around the Catholic mission. A shot of Matthias Ulungura with his wife and child. Matthias was responsible for bringing in the first Japanese airman Hajime Toyoshima, who crashed on Bathurst Island. Voyage up the Appsley Strait to Point Walter and scenes around the mission. Closes with shots of Aborigines enlisted and serving with the Darwin Water Transport Unit. Officers shown in the film are Major Corr, of Darwin Water Transport and WX33753 Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Forbes of Darwin Coast Artillery.
