History / Summary
This flag was brought back from the Western Sahara by Warrant Officer 2 Peter Zajac, a member of the Australian contingent of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Western Sahara (MINURSO) during 1991.
MINURSO is a United Nations mandated mission to monitor a cease-fire and provide a transitional period for the preparation of a referendum for the people of Western Sahara to choose between independence and integration with Morocco. Australia provided the mission's 45-strong Force Communications Unit from September 1991 until the end of 1994.
