Description

NX34949 Captain John Percival Higgin, 2/4 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, relates his experiences as a medical officer (MO) and prisoner of war (POW) in A Force. The interview starts covers his experience from the surrender of Singapore and continues through to his return to Sydney. The interview concentrates primarily on his experiences of camp life and travel as a POW including punishments, camp conditions, prisoner treatment and collaboration with Dutch medical officers.

There is some limited discussion in regards to medical conditions such as dysentery, malaria, cholera, scrub typhus, ulcers, gangrene, infected sores, bronchitis, pellagra and mental health. This also includes treatments using improvised medical equipment, intravenous therapy, the making of anaesthetics and set up of 55 Hospital Camp.
