Newman, Barrie Malcolm (Captain, b.1935)
Collection relating to the service of Captain Barrie Malcolm Newman, RFD, ED, Australian Army, serving in the State of Jammu and Kashmir with the United Nations Military Observer Group India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of the transcript of a speech entitled 'My Military Service in Kashmir, 1964-65'. The speech was delivered by Captain Newman to the Military Historical Society of Australia (South Australia Branch) at Keswick Barracks South Australia on 10 March 2006. The address discusses Newman's tour in Kashmir; the background to the territorial conflict; the challenge of working in the mountainous area; minefields; inadequate supplies and uniforms; and a general lack of information. Newman often mentions Lieutenant General Robert Nimmo, Chief Military Observer of UNMOGIP for 16 years.
