Description

Australian prisoners of war (POWs) after their release from Ambon following the Japanese surrender, relaxing on deck reading newspapers aboard HMAS Glenelg en route to Morotai. Their malnourished and emaciated physical condition is evidence of their treatment by the Japanese. Left to right: back row: Bert Jones, Rex Hattersley, Don Baker, C. Blackney, H. Goodwin; front row: Jim Ellis of Aspendale, Vic, Russ Lavery, S. Proud, Warrant Officer M. Ryan. Many of those released were initially too ill from disease and malnutrition to walk.
