Collection relating to Ernest William Latchford
A photographic postcard believed to depict the body of a British soldier on the Western Front. The card was addressed to "Dave" on 27 February 1917 from Captain Ernest William Latchford, 38th Battalion, who wrote on the reverse "Dear Dave, We had a big raid on Fritz's trenches last night, in which we first got to bolts with him in decent style. It was my first experience in the attack. My party sneaked out about midnight in front of his lines and waited for the artillery to open fire. As soon as it did, off we went, up to our hocks in mud and once up to my waist in a ditch full of water. I got through alright and didn’t feel scared. The noise was indescribable. This card is a souvenir from one of his dug-outs. It represents a dead British lad. Yours sincerely, Ern"
