Collection relating to the Vietnam War service of 3475 Brigadier John Francis McDonagh, 1st Australian Civil Affairs Unit, New Guinea and Australia, 1967-1968.

Collection consists of four green-covered, Australian Military Forces, 'Field and Message Note Books'. The notebooks span the period September 1967 - February 1968, or shortly thereafter. Within the notebooks are brief entries such as reminders to complete certain tasks, various meetings, notes regarding various places visited, mentions of refugees, setting up aid stations, and shopping lists.

Also included are two diaries dated 1967 and 1968. The 1967 diary is a brown faux-leather covered diary, and the 1968 diary is tan coloured, with a light blue spine and Lt Col J.F. McDonagh 1968 written on the cover. Both diaries contain address books at the beginning. Both cover both time spent in Australia and New Guinea, with the 1968 diary also covering a very brief period in Papua New Guinea. Both diaries are written with regular short notes regarding tasks for a particular day. Neither are written as a narrative record of recent occurrences, however simply note things such as shopping lists, doctors appointments, and the like. While in Vietnam, the diaries contain more regular entries. These entries largely relate to the orgranisation of administrational tasks, such as setting up aid stations, organising dentists, etc., as well as visits to various villages, and the organisation of services for the local population.
