Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of WX9391 Sergeant Bernard Patrick “Barny” Doolan, 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion, Burma, Thailand and Australia, 1940-1944.

Sergeant Doolan served with the 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion in Singapore, but was captured as a prisoner of war when the city fell to the Japanese in February 1942. He was interned at Changi Prisoner of War Camp and worked on the Burma-Thai Railway.

Folder 1 of this collection consists of one Soldier’s Pay Book of Sergeant Doolan, with entries dated between 1940 and 1944. The pay book contains details on postings, rates of pay, earnings, next of kin, medical conditions, and inoculations.

Folder 2 of this collection consists of four postcards from Sergeant Doolan to his wife from prisoner of war camps in Burma and Thailand, [dates unknown]. The postcards are printed with prescribed messages from the Japanese Army, with space for a short message from the prisoner. On his postcards, Sergeant Doolan sends his love and says that he is well.
