Australian airmen, left to right: 405263 Pilot Officer (PO) Verdun Richard Stephens DFM, 97 Squadron, RAF of Brisbane, Qld; 403803 PO Peter Louis Elliott DFM, 61 Squadron, RAF of Dungog, NSW; 402601 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Ronald MacKay Mould DFM, 460 Squadron, RAAF of Cooma, NSW; 404857 PO Patrick Ernest McCarthy DFM, 61 Squadron, RAF of Billinudgel, NSW; and 400497 PO (later Flying Officer [FO]) Neil Gordon Stewart DFM, of 148 Squadron, RAF of Yarragon, Vic, outside Buckingham Palace after all had received Distinguished Flying Medals (DFM). FO Stewart was killed in an accident when his aircraft crashed at Hixon, Staffordshire, UK on 10 September, 1943 while attached to 27 Operational Training Unit, RAF. He is buried in the RAF Regional Cemetery, Chester, England.
