United States General arrives DPR/TV/575 & 576
One of America's highest ranking Generals, who has seen Australian troops in action in Vietnam, arrived in Canberra this morning. He is General Paul LaMarch Freeman Junior, Commanding General of the United States Continental Army, who is also Commander-in-Chief of Army Forces, US Strike Command, and Commander-in Chief of Army Forces, Atlantic. Yesterday he visted Port Moresby on the first leg of his tour of Australian Army establishments. Accompanied by his wife, Mrs Mary Freeman and other U.S. Army officers, General Freeman was met at Port Moresby's Jackson Airport by the Commander, Papua-New Guinea Command, Brigadier I.M. Hunter and Mrs Hunter. Before leaving the airport General Freeman inspected a guard of honour provided by the 1st Battalion P.I.R.. He then moved to Goldie River, about 15 miles from Port Moresby, the site of the Army's Papua-New Guinea Training Depot, where all Army recruits undergo their basic training. Here, General Freeman watched weapon and fieldcraft training and inspected the native-style lines of the recruit platoons. He showed particular interest in the Australian Army's F1 machine carbine - and readily accepted an offer to have a "shot."During his six days visit to Australia, General Freeman will have talks with senior Ministers, Service Chiefs and departmental heads. General Freeman and his wife were met at Fairbairn Airport by the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant- General T.J. Daly and Mrs Daly. The American General will also study jungle training techniques at the famous training centre at Canungra, Queensland. He will see the Australian Army in action at establishments in Victoria, NSW and Queensland. General Freeman comes to Australia fresh from a tour of Vietnam, where Australian performance in the field and traing methods have impressed American officers.
