Informal outdoor portrait of V255944 Private James Alfred (Jim) Walker MM, 24th Battalion. Pte Walker was wounded in action at Markham Point on 4th September 1943 and for his actions over the next four days was awarded the Military Medal. On the first day of fighting, both he and NX57501 Lieutenant (Lt) Frederick Harold (Fred) Childs were wounded in the field. Although himself injured, Lt Childs assisted a severely injured Pte Walker through enemy lines for four days, without water and with flyblown wounds. Initially reported missing, both men reached their own lines on the fourth day. Lt Childs was later awarded the MC for his actions in rescuing Pte Walker. Pte Walker's left arm was later amputated due to his injuries and he was medically discharged on 17 June 1944. James Walker had this photograph taken on his 21st Birthday on March 26, 1944, and sent this copy to Lt Childs on 10 July 1944, writing on the verso, "To Fred, From James". James Alfred Walker died in 1968.
