Informal portrait of 2/712881 Kenneth Bernard Fanning, an early participant in the first National Serviceman's Scheme. Fanning turned eighteen in August 1952 and began his National Service that month with 12 National Service Training Battalion at Holsworthy. This unit comprised five companies: A and B Coys were armoured and C-E Coy artillery. Along with the 13th and 19th National Service Training Battalions the 12th made up the 2nd National Service Training Brigade. After completion of his national service on 18 November, Fanning served as part of the Citizen Military Forces until 12 August 1957.
