Korea Medal: Warrant Officer Class 1 L H W Andrew, Royal Australian Artillery
Korea Medal, impressed around edge with recipient's details.
Leonard Harold William Andrew was born in South Melbourne on 3 April 1926 and enlisted in the Second AIF on 11 April 1944, soon after his 18th birthday. He served in the Pacific Theatre before being posted to Japan with 66 Australian Infantry Battalion as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force.
In Japan, Andrew was a member of the Provost Combined Rugby League Team. The team went on to become the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) premiers in April 1950. Here he met Tomiko, a Hiroshima survivor, who would become his wife and immigrate to Australia with him.
He served in Korea for periods between 1950 and 1953. Also seeing service in Papua New Guinea, Andrew joined the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police and commissioned to lieutenant in the mid-1960s. He completed his career with the rank of major as Deputy Assistant Provost Marshall, 3 Military District. He was discharged on 1 April 1981 at the age of 55, after 37 years of service.
