Description

Portrait of N74270 Captain (Capt) Roderic(k) Archibald Macalpine MC, Commanding Officer B Company, 2nd Infantry Training Battalion.

A warehouse clerk, from Mosman, NSW, Macalpine had served with the NSW Scottish Rifles and Citizens Military Forces, before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 17 August 1914, aged 22 years (service number 143). He joined the 4th Battalion as a Sergaent Major and served on Gallipoli and the Western Front, where he was later Mentioned in Dispatches and promoted to Second Lieutenant for actions at Pozieres. For his actions at Boursies, Macalpine was awarded the Military Cross on 23 April 1917. He attended various training and was promoted to Captain, taking a post as Assistant Instructor at the Australian Corps School in France. At the end of the war, he returned to Australia.

During the Second World War, Capt Macalpine served with the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion. His son N318765 / 428726 Roderic Wallace Macalpine also served in the Citizens Military Forces and the Royal Australian Air Force.
