Description
Portrait of an unnamed New Guinean man carrying a stretcher. The work was drawn in New Guinea by Australian soldier NX66736 Private Thomas Henry Morgan while he was in hospital recuperating from wounds. Private Morgan was subsequently killed in action in New Guinea on 19 August 1943 serving with the 2/3rd Infantry Battalion. The work was displayed in an exhibition of soldier art organised by the American Red Cross in 1943 (the first "Red Cross Allied Servicemen's Art Show"). The show was mounted in New Guinea and toured to Australia, where this work was voted 'first choice' by visitors to the Sydney exhibition.
