Description

This screenprint poster is a calendar for 1984 is a collaboration between the artists Nigel Lendon and Pam Debenham made at the Sydney University Art Workshop. The numerals made up of yellow outline drawings of military hardware such as ships, aircraft, tanks, guns and missiles. Around the edge are quotes from George Orwell's '1984'. They say 'War, it will be seen, not only accomplishes the neccessary destruction, but accomplishes it in a psychologically acceptable way'; 'The primary aim of modern warfare is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standards of living'; and 'War hysteria is continuous and universal in all countries'.

The acclaimed print workshop at Sydney University was home to a thriving screenprinting studio throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Every year a poster was produced as a calendar, featuring leading printmakers at the studio.
