Description

An educational poster in Cambodian produced by the United Nations Transitional Authority for Cambodia (UNTAC). This is one of many posters that were disseminated throughout 1992 and 1993 to inform Cambodians of the work of UNTAC and the services they provided. The poster depicts four soldiers, one from each of the four Cambodian factions, handing over their arms to a United Nations peacekeeper. One of the functions of the Military Component of UNTAC was to supervise the cantonment, disarming and demobilization of forces of the four Cambodian parties leading up to the 1993 elections. The poster shows troops handing over their weapons to a United Nations peacekeeper. By mid- November 1992 UNTAC had cantoned approximately 55,000 troops of the three cooperating Cambodian parties. However the refusal of the party of Democratic Kampuchea (PDK) to participate fully in the peace process resulted in the cantonment, disarming and demobilization of troops being suspended.
