Description

Image depicts YMCA Dobodura. Ivan Anderson was at Dobodura in 1943 - 1944. During the Second World War the YMCA established mobile canteens to deliver refreshments to the troops. In Australia, the YMCA had the same status as the Red Cross Society, the Australian Comforts Fund and the Salvation Army. Hence, the YMCA had permission to operate with troops in all areas including front line positions.

From November 1941, Ivan Anderson served in the CMF, V200106, until he enlisted in the AIF, VX110883, at St. Kilda on the 15th of October, 1942. He followed his trade as a postal employee throughout the war serving in No.2 Australia Base Postal Unit and then in No.11 Australian Division Postal Unit until the 1st of February, 1946. Ivan served in New Guinea throughout the war starting at Milne Bay in November of 1942, and then Port Moresby from January 1943, Dobodura from 1943 to 1944, Buna in March 1944, Ramu Valley in April of 1944, and then Lae, which he left on the 26th of April, 1944. He then served in New Britain from September 1945 until January 1946. Ivan died after the war in 1987.
