Description

SX32886/S50858 William (Bill) Leslie Maguire interviewed by Alison Viney Houghton for her "The Age of Innocence 1937-1947" oral history project. The interview covers topics related to Bill's working life in a family of shopkeepers at St Peters, SA, and his service in New Guinea, such as: living next to the fruit shop with his wife Ruby; the long hours at the shop; operating a milk bar; the 9th Division assisting with the shop after returning from the Middle East; enlisting into the army in 1943; working in the army canteens in New Guinea; setting up new canteens including the troops club and the women's service club in Port Moresby; going home on leave for six months when Ruby had appendicitis; playing cricket in New Guinea; the publication 'Guinea Gold' which gave news of released POWs; returning to Australia on the HMAS Canberra; operating a canteen bar in Townsville; making 'Lady Blamey's, beer glasses made out of bottles; returning home on Christmas Eve of 1945, and getting straight back to work in the fruit shop; getting refrigeration at the shop; supplying fruit to the Church of England Boys' Home; post-war rationing of cigarettes and petrol.
