Description

Mrs Bridger was a young woman during the war. Her brother served in Crete and Greece, and was wounded in Crete. The family was notified of his wounds by the Red Cross and the Army. He was away for three years and got ten day's leave. He was then posted to New Guinea where he was killed. She mentions that the family was notified by telegram and the postman was a very important figure. Telegrams were delivered by a telegram boy. Mrs Bridger remarks that her when her boyfriend of the time enlisted, her proud reaction was quite different to his mother's heartbroken reaction. She comments that three out of fourteen houses in their street in Hurstville, Sydney lost boys in the war. She concludes that the most trying part of the war years was doing without, rationing and living without loved ones.
