History / Summary

Souvenired by donor from the shattered engine of a Zero fighter which was shot down by ground fire during a raid on the Catalina base, Port Moresby on 28 February 1942. The raid consisted of 11 bombers and 5 Zeros. They flew past Pargoe Point and strafed some of the Catalinas, before one was hit by Army fire in the vicinity of Bootless Inlet and came down in the water. The donor served with RAAF Marine Section attached to Catalina squadrons from 25.1.42 - 3.9.42. Parts of the aircraft were brought to the surface by divers, including a cylinder head which included this valve. The pilot bailed out, and was captured and interrogated in Melbourne. He was the first Japanese prisoner to be taken in New Guinea.
