Description

Log book relating to the Second World War service of 205745 Flight Lieutenant Garth Edward Sommerville Clabburn, No. 452 Squadron.

This flying log book documents flights that Clabburn made between April 1941 and May 1946, and includes details such as dates, types of aircraft flown, passengers, purposes of the flights, and time spent in the air. It reflects Clabburn’s time of service with the Number 3 Squadron in Northern Africa, in which he performed many successful reconnaissance and bombing operations in Kittyhawk aircraft. The log book also records his training flights in Australia in which he converted to Wirraway and Spitfire aircraft, and his subsequent service with the Number 452 Squadron in Malaysia in 1945. It concludes with entries recording flights that Clabburn made as part of Australian National Airways in 1946. In addition to regular entries, this log book includes several photographs and a copy of the poem “High Flight” by Canadian pilot John Gillespie Magee Jr.
