Description

[Recto] This print titled 'Les Semailles [The harvest]' depicts a large Prussian Eagle looming over the landscape while farmers work in the fields, protected by a warrior with a shield and a knife. The caption 'Ne crains rien, je veille! ... Creuse le sol d'ou sortira la Moisson de la Paix [Do not be afraid, I am watching!... Dig the ground for the Harvest of Peace]' is the warrior speaking to the farmers, assuring them of protection against the approach of the threat. The cap worn by the figure is a Phrygian cap, otherwise known as the liberty cap, and is associated with Marianne, the personification of French Liberty often used in works of French nationalism.

[Verso] This image titled 'Hier et Aujourd'hui [Yesterday and Today]' depicts a comparison of two very different nighttime scenes. The scene on the left shows two young women walking together underneath a clear night sky, and is captioned 'Les etoiles du passe [the stars of the past]. On the right, a scene of chaos involving entagled nude bodies, spotlights from a blimp and the Eiffel Tower, and vehicles beneath an overcast sky is captioned 'Les lumieres du present [The lights of the present]'. A commentary on changing social values, Willette criticises the changes that modernisation has had on French society.
