Kure, Japan. 1950-08-15. After disembarking from HMAS Bataan, Australian Prime Minister Mr Robert Menzies, dubbed by critics "Pig Iron Bob", and BCOF Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General H. C. H. Robertson, prepare for an inspection of a Guard of Honour supplied by "C" Company, 3rd Battalion. Shown: 2/2608 Private J. P. Clark; 5/1213 Private A. K. Cardinal and 3/45617 Private J. C. Blackmore. Menzies was given his nickname at the end of the 1930s when, as federal Attorney General, he fought with Australian waterside workers who were refusing to load iron ore sold to Japan. The waterside workers opposed the shipments in the belief that the ore would be used to manufacture weapons for use by Japan in its war against China. The railway tracks, along which the PM is striding in a commanding manner, allowed the huge iron and steel dockyard crane (rear) to traverse the length of the dock. Kure was a major Japanese naval base during the Second World War.
