Mirow and Awliya
Description
Depicts a Somalian woman, Mirow, carrying her six-year-old granddaughter, Awliya to a remote feeding station run by the CRS [Catholic Relief] at Makuboy, Somalia. Behind the woman and child are extensive thorn bushes. The artist wrote of this work: 'I am sitting under a thorn bush with them and Awliya is starting to sip some porridge...this means she will probably live...Mirow brought the children to the aid centre after their mother had died. She had to carry them, as none were strong enough to walk...today Mirow has still to carry Awliya from place to place'.
