Turkish Crimea Medal : Corporal A Berckelman, 17th Lancers
Turkish Crimea Medal - Sardinian issue. Unnamed as issued. Obverse: Map of the Crimea spread over the wheel of a cannon that is standing on the Russian flag. To the left are three cannon balls and a ramrod; to the right, an anchor and a mortar. Issuing from behind the cannon are the four flags of the Allies. In the exergue, 'LA CRIMEA 1855'. Reverse: Enclosed in a laurel wreath is the Sultan's cypher above Turkish Arabic script (Crimea) and the year 1271 (1855) in Arabic. The medal is fitted with a foliated swivel suspender and a piece of 30 mm of watered crimson ribbon with green edges. A plain silver pin brooch, is attached to the ribbon.
Corporal Arthur Berckelman was born at Kilkenny, Ireland on 9 May 1828. He was a clerk prior to his enlistment as a private in the 87th Regiment of Foot, on 9 May 1844. Transferred to the 17th Lancers on 1 August 1846, he was promoted corporal on 1 October 1855. Berckelman was discharged in Dublin, Ireland on 27 November 1856. He migrated to Australia later in the 1850s and died in 1904 at Windsor, NSW.
