The Australian Army's Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Daly, returned home to Canberra today after his eighth visit to South Vietnam. During his five-day tour, Lieutenant-General Daly visited Australian and allied fighting men in the field and spoke with allied commanders, including the Commander, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Creighton Abrams. The Chief of the General Staff flew by helicopter to the Xuyen Moc district, 15 miles east of the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat. With him were the Task Force Commander, Brigadier C. M. I. Pearson of Canberra, ACT and the Commander, Australian Forces Vietnam, Major-General R. A. Hay. They were met by the Officer Commanding "B" Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Major R. E. Rooks of Duntroon, ACT and the District Chief, Major Le Van Que. Lieutenant-General Daly also met the Commander of 1st Troop, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Captain Dave Lawrence of Parramatta, NSW. Later, a trip by armoured personnel carrier to see new works in the area. Engineers of the 1st Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers, have spent weeks in the area, rebuilding bridges and requiring the road surface to reopen Route 23, to allow villagers, once moved out for protection, to go back home. The Officer Commanding the Squadron, Major Rex Rowe of Holsworthy, NSW, was on hand to brief the Chief of the General Staff on the construction works and the land clearing operations on either side of the road.
