Wallet 1 of 1 - Prayer book relating to an unknown Turkish soldier who served at Gallipoli, 1915
Description
Collection relating to an unknown Turkish soldier who served at Gallipoli, 1915.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of one brown and maroon leather covered Arabic prayer book. The book was collected by Lieutenant Colonel Stanley Holm Watson, who recovered it from the body of a dead Turkish soldier during the 8-hour ceasefire called between Allied and Ottoman Forces on 24 May 1915 in order to recover their dead and wounded from no man's land.
The leaves of the book are made of hand-laid paper, with obvious chainlines. This indicates that the book was an antique document at the time of collection in 1915, likely dating to around the 18th century.
