Identity bracelet: Leading Aircraftman Stanley Norman Rowell, 3 Service Flying Training School RCAF
Silver private purchase identity bracelet. The disc is oval shaped and features a miniature enamelled RAAF pilots wings badge with the engraved inscription 'AUS . 6068 ROWELL.S.H.'. The reverse of the bracelet is engraved 'Marion to Stan 28/1/44' and has the manufacturer's marking 'STERLING ECCO'.
Silver identity bracelet given by Marion to 6068 Leading Aircraftman Stanley Norman Rowell for his 23rd birthday, on 28 January 1944. Marion was Rowell's fiancee. Her surname is unknown as family papers were destroyed in a fire. She is thought to have been Canadian and may have lived in the Calgary area when she met Rowell.
Rowell enlisted in the RAAF in 1939 and worked as a clerk in Australia before training as a pilot. He embarked for Canada for further training in 1943, arriving at Calgary in late October 1943. He was training with 3 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) when he died after being fatally injured in a training accident on 21 March 1944.
Rowell and a Canadian trainee pilot from Mission City, Corporal Edward Charles McIntyre were each flying Cessna Crane training aircraft. Flying at about 400-500 feet (approximately 120 - 150 metres), one of the aircraft hit the tail of the other, causing both to plunge to the ground. Both aircraft crashed near homes but no one on the ground was injured or killed.
Rowell's funeral was conducted by Flight Lieutenant L D Bourassa, chaplain of 3 SFTS on Friday 24 March 1944 at 10am at Leyden's Funeral Home. His body was interred at Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary.
Rowell died a few weeks before his wedding to Marion was to take place. What happened to her after his death is unknown.
