8 RAR birthday parade DPR/TV/1311
Troops of the 8th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, took a break from the war to celebrate their unit's birthday in Vietnam this week. About 600 troops - including two companies which returned from operations only hours before the parade - lined up on the unit's grass parade-ground, which also doubles as a helicopter pad. 3210 Brigadier William George Henderson, the commander of the 1st Australian Task Force, inspected the troops and later took the salute as the battalion marched past. The 8th Battalion is one of three infantry battalions which form the bulk of the Task Force, based at Nui Dat. Later, in soldiers, sergeants and officers' messes in the battalion's base, special barbeque lunches marked the fourth birthday of the unit...and the toast was "The Eighth". Also identified: Lieutenant-Colonel O'Neill.
