Description

Men of the 1st Australian Civil Affairs Units are putting the finishing touches to a project which will bring electricity to a Vietnamese village about seven miles from the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat. The site is the village of Tam Phuoc, nestling near the foothills of the Long Hai mountains, traditional haunt of the local Viet Cong guerillas. Joining the Civil Affairs soldiers are a group of Vietnamese, who have been apprenticed to the Australians for trade experience. The electricity, to be connected within the next few weeks, will bring a new life to the 700 villagers of Tam Phuoc, allowing them to use household appliances which were previously impossible to operate - irons, sewing machines, television sets and radios. Carpenters, electricians and other specialists have been working on the Tam Phuoc (pronounced Tam Fook) project for the past five months. The villagers contributed about $6,500 which purchased the generator, and each household connected will pay $10, which will be ploughed back into other aid for the community. Their work will be climaxed early in December when the lights are switched on for the first time and the oil lamps are extinguished for good.
