Coutances, France. C. 1944-11. Despite extensive damage in Coutances, in the area in which heavy fighting took place before the fall of Cherbourg 1944-06-26, the cathedral appears substantially intact amidst the rubble and ruin. The fine western towers and spires contrast effectively with the unusual octagonal central tower.
