Koyagi Island, Nagasaki, Japan, 1945. An aerial view of Fukuoka No. 2 Prisoner of War Camp on Koyagi Island. This photograph was taken by an USAAF aircraft late in 1945 as the roofs of the buildings are clearly marked "PW", indicating allied prisoners of war. This camp held allied prisoners of war who all worked at the Kawanami Brothers shipyards. The shipyards employed about 60,000 workers including 1500 allied prisoners of war (POW). The POWs who worked in the shipyards comprised two groups. The first, of about 550 British, with some Australians, 500 Dutch and 100 Americans, arrived in 1942, embarking on the Asama Maru at Macassar and arriving at Nahasaki on 1942-10-24. The other group of 198 Australians arrived 1944-09-09 after a 70 day voyage from Singapore on the Rashin Maru.
