Collection relating to the Operation Habitat service of 180644 Captain (later Major) Ralph Lawrence Sadler, Headquarters Australian Service Contingent, Iraq, 1991.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of three folders of documents, newspaper clippings, and notebooks relating to Sadler's service as Liaison Officer with the Australian Service Contingent on Operation Habitat in northern Iraq in 1991.
Folder 1 of 3 - Consists of maps, documents and letters related to Operation Habitat. The folder includes an operational navigation chart of the staging area in northern Iraq, a nominal roll of the Australian Service Contingent on Operation Habitat, a predeployment program, movement orders, an intelligence summary for the period of 16 to 30 May 1991, and a record of the contingent's daily routine. The folder also includes copies of letters from Gordon Bilney, the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, and the commander of the 1st Australian Division relaying the importance of the mission, as well as copies of letters from United States Secretary of Defence Dick Cheney and the commander of the United Kingdom contingent commending the Australians on their work in northern Iraq.
Folder 2 of 3 - Consists of scans of 19 newspaper and magazine clippings related to the deployment, service, and return of the Australian continent on Operation Habitat and reports on Operations Haven and Provide Comfort (the British and United States code names for the mission), including one article on psychological warfare.
Folder 3 of 3 - Consists of scans of two notebooks maintained by Sadler prior to and during his deployment, as well as an autographed menu for a dining in night on 10 June 1991, and copies of four editions of "E-O-S", a short satirical magazine produced by members of the Australian Service Contingent. Sadler's notebooks include briefing notes, reminders, the tasks, roles and routine of those serving with the contingent, details on mines and security threats, instructions on transiting Turkey and into northern Iraq, and notes on meetings and general problems.
